What once was an old crane repair station, and then an art gallery, is now a celebration of history, industry and art.

Modern lines. Soaring Douglas fir ceilings. Open floor plan.

This beautifully designed structure has been thoughtfully reimagined as a unique event venue in Seattle. Over 10,000 square feet of versatile space can be configured to suit any need from an intimate gathering that moves through several small spaces to a grand statement that utilizes the sheer volume of the place. Canvas’ interiors and finishes make it the perfect palette to “paint” an event just the way you desire.

Canvas offers an upscale catering kitchen, a brand new A/V System with HD Projector, surround sound, iPod dock, Wi-Fi, Bride and Groom suites, and ample free parking for your visitors. Guests will also get to enjoy the amazing art collection on display at Canvas.

It is breathtaking in possibility and an icon of individuality. There is no other venue quite like Canvas. Now available for weddings, receptions, ceremonies, rehearsal dinners, engagement parties, showers, fundraisers, corporate meetings and other unforgettable events.

Canvas’ rich history makes even the building itself a true work of art! The building dates back to the mid-’50s, when it served as the workshop and warehouse of Western Bridge, a general contractor in Seattle. Through the rest of the century the building was home to a range of industrial businesses. At the beginning of the 21st century the building was re-imagined and renovated by Roy McMakin and Domestic Architecture to serve as a contemporary art space, named after the building’s original tenant. Inside, the building wove private and public spaces in an interlocking composition, offering galleries in a range of scales to suit art in various media.

While operating as an art space, Western Bridge was home to many events and celebrations. Designed to bring people together, Western Bridge became a place of culture, togetherness and thought.

Canvas has expanded on the idea of Western Bridge and has progressed into an ideal event venue that still celebrates art, togetherness and family. Canvas is a family affair. Owned and operated by the True family of Seattle, Canvas serves clients with first-class, hands-on, genuine care. Our goal is to make your dream event a reality.

Advice to couples in selecting a Venue space?

First, make a list of your venue essentials - location, ideal time of year, projected guest list size… your basic wish list.

Second, it’s early, but go ahead and draft a realistic estimated budget.

Next, do some research on event spaces in your zip code(s) of choice and narrow down your options.

Then, tour a handful of venues.  Appointments are usually required and need to be booked in advance.

Since your venue is one of the very first wedding planning boxes that you must check, make sure the venue is versatile and offers flexibility to adapt to your wedding desires and the planning progresses.

Lastly, ask yourself if this venue coincides with your style and overall event vision. What’s important to you two? Can you work with this space to make it your own? Listen to your instincts.

We have had so many memorable events at Canvas. Some of our favorite events are the charity events we have had in our space. It is so amazing to give back to a community that has given us so much. We love watching every event unfold at Canvas. Weddings are magical and charity events inspiring

Get ready for the industrial luxe metallic era.

We’ve seen a lot of pretty burlap and gorgeous rustic wedding wedding ideas over the last few years, and we still love them, but we predict couples will be looking for something slightly different in 2017. Something a little louder. A bit more attitude. An edgy vibe.

We forecast industrial modern chic will be the fiercest wedding look in 2017 giving off contemporary urban airs! Think muted brushed metals, coppers and rose gold combined with neutrals as your color palette. Then combine those metallics with industrial and modern touches to set the stage for a fashionable yet classy feel. Or take it to the edge by incorporating rough gemstones too for a look that is glamorous but not too ‘done’. Bring on the metallic takeover!

Above all else, Canvas is the home of unique, modern and historical art, which allows your event, whatever it may be, to be truly unique. You’re invited to come see for yourself the beauty that Canvas offers.

A Holiday Engagement

On the contrary to what many may believe, getting engaged during the winter months can be a magical experience. You just need the right setting, right ring and right timing! Here are a few great winter engagement ideas that we love.

Sleigh ride. There are a lot of snowy havens you and yours can escape to during the winter months and, luckily, many of these offer fun winter activities. One of our favorite is sleigh rides! Mountain ranch resorts, for example Vista Verde Ranch in Colorado, often have sleigh rides available for anyone looking for a romantic adventure through the snow. This is the perfect chance to ask your other half to marry you.

Skiing. If you enjoy skiing and/or snowboarding with your partner during the snowy season, then this is another chance for you to pop the question in a special way. This is a little more unique to you and yours, because going to the mountain together may be something special you enjoy just between the two of you. Being high up on a snowy mountain after you hop off the ski lift gives you two a chance to be alone for a few minutes before you sail down the mountain, offering the perfect opportunity to ask. If you’re eager (and brave), grab a ski lift chair for just the two of you and ask then!

Hiking. If you two are adventurous in other ways and enjoy activities like hiking and exploring the outdoors, a nice short hike to a beautiful snow peaked mountain would be an excellent choice to get down on one knee and ask your person for their hand in marriage. This is a much more intimate setting if you’re trying to pop the question when it’s just the two of you.

Decorating your Christmas tree. If your person is helping decorate your Christmas tree for the holidays, or if you two live together, bump up the Christmas tunes, whip up some holiday style cocktails or mocktails (like mulled cider, hot toddies, or hot chocolate) and surprise him or her with that beautiful one-of-a-kind ring you’ve been hiding!

Christmas presents. Whether you two are wrapping gifts together for family and friends, or exchanging gifts with each other, popping the question during one of these events is exciting, heartwarming and sweet.

New Year’s Eve. Kickoff the New Year with an engagement to accompany your midnight kiss. As soon as the clock strikes 12am, add to the excitement of the New Year by expressing your wish to spend the rest of your life with your partner!

Any way you decide to propose to your love is going to be magical, but these are a few ideas to mull over if you can’t decide how you want to propose. Take your time to find the best that fits you two as a couple; personality and style wise. No matter how you decide to propose, this event will be magical and you’ll remember if for the rest of your life—you can’t go wrong!

Fine Tuning Your Special Day

On Tuesday, we looked at live music options for your wedding day. So, today we are discovering what the music world has to offer in the opposite direction. Ultimately, there are two options to choose from: DJ or iPod. There are advantages and disadvantages to each, so let’s take a look at the full spectrum of each.

DJ. If you don’t want the responsibility of changing music or directing guests, a DJ is an excellent choice. Compile a list of music highlighting specific songs that you want played at certain times throughout the night and give them to your DJ. If you don’t have a preference toward specific songs, just give him or her a genre and general guideline for the flow of your big day. The great thing about a DJ is they double as an MC that can direct your guests throughout the night as the festivities shift from one to another. For example, he can rally everyone to gather near the cake table for the cake cutting, the dancefloor to watch the couple’s first dance, etc. Choosing a DJ can be tricky though. If you hire a DJ that you don’t click with and his or her personality doesn’t mesh with you and your fiancé, it can most definitely create frustration throughout the celebration. You need to be on the same page as far as the music you like and your expectations of his or her tasks throughout the night. Part of the reason you’re hiring a DJ in the first place is to reduce the amount of worry and work on your part. It’s important to make sure it’s the right fit when you make your final decision. A DJ will be more expensive than using a playlist on your iPod, but it is worth it if you want to reduce worry and responsibility on your part.

iPod. Creating wedding playlists on your iPod is an easy and inexpensive way to keep the party going on your wedding day. Not only is it much less expensive than a DJ, but you also have complete control of the songs you want to play and when you want to play them. One downfall to this, however, is that you need to keep up on the music throughout the entirety of the event. If you create a couple different playlists ahead of time, this won’t be an issue; you will just need to make sure the songs are continuously playing throughout the celebration. Aside from keeping track of the music yourself, which works great for some couples, you also need to either designate someone to MC the event or help to maneuver your guests throughout the celebration to the correct locations for the bouquet toss, and other events of the like throughout the event yourself. This can be the most taxing and worrisome disadvantage for the couple choosing an iPod, as most are caught between chatting with guests, trying to eat, and taking photos. Adding another responsibility onto the plate can be exhausting and stressful, and may take away from enjoying the moment for most couples. Therefore, an iPod works great for smaller gatherings where there are less people attending to visit with and round up for cutting of the cake as well as other elements of the like. It is also much easier and quick to fix any musical errors when you aren’t running around trying to connect with over one hundred people in only a few hours! An iPod is perfect for a smaller and intimate setting.

Music is an important element of your big day because it sets the mood and atmosphere of the event. Mull these positives and negatives over with your significant other before making any big decisions, and consider the live music options we proposed on Tuesday as well. Choose what is best for you as a couple and you can’t go wrong!
