There is something undeniably magical about a fall wedding.
The leaves are changing. The air is crisp. The golden hour seems to last just a little longer. And suddenly, everyone is wearing boots, velvet, rich colors, and approximately 47 layers.
As a wedding planner, I have a soft spot for fall weddings and not just because the weather is usually much kinder than a sweltering, summer wedding day. Fall gives everyone involved a chance to have a little more fun with fashion.
Brides can add layers and unexpected textures. Bridesmaids can embrace rich, romantic colors. Grooms can trade lightweight summer suits for gorgeous wool and tweed. And wedding guests finally have an excuse to wear that fabulous outfit that's been waiting patiently in the closet.
So grab your coffee, pull out your favorite sweater, and let's talk about fall wedding fashion.
Start With the Colors
Fall practically does the styling for us. We’re talking about: burgundy, Rust, chocolate brown, deep green, plum, champagne, caramel, dusty rose, navy, and of course classic black.
These rich colors naturally complement the changing landscape and create an atmosphere that feels romantic and sophisticated.
For bridesmaids, fall is a particularly fun season because there are so many beautiful colors to choose from. You don't necessarily need every bridesmaid in the exact same shade, either. A mix of complementary autumn tones can create a beautiful, dimensional bridal party. Imagine burgundy next to dusty rose. Deep green paired with champagne. Terracotta mixed with soft neutrals. It's giving a romantic autumn editorial and we're here for it.
Bridal Fashion: Add a Little Something Extra
Fall brides have one major advantage:
Layers. And layers are where things get really fun.
A classic wedding dress can take on an entirely different personality with the addition of a beautiful bridal jacket, cape, shawl, or veil.
Think lace sleeves, a velvet bow, a dramatic cape, a delicate bolero, a structured bridal jacket, or a cozy wrap for those chilly outdoor portraits.
And don't assume your extra layer has to stay on all night. You can wear one look for the ceremony and portraits, then remove the outer layer for the reception. It's basically two bridal looks without needing to buy two completely different dresses (wedding planner math).
The Shoes Deserve Their Moment
Your shoes may not be the first thing your guests notice, but they are going to matter approximately 100 times more than you think.
Why? Because you're going to be standing, walking, dancing, taking photos, walking some more, and possibly doing a very enthusiastic dance that requires more footwork than expected.
Fall is the perfect season to have fun with bridal shoes. Think outside the wedding fashion box and consider velvet heels, embellished flats, sleek boots, or a classic pair of pumps.
And our best advice? Bring a backup pair. Nobody has ever regretted having comfortable shoes waiting in the bridal suite. Or when you’re on hour 8 of your wedding day and want to slip into some cozy slides. Nobody will ever regret it.
Bridesmaid Fashion Gets Cozy
Bridesmaid dresses and fall weddings are a match made in heaven. The season allows for richer fabrics and deeper colors that can make bridesmaid fashion feel incredibly elevated.
Velvet is a particularly beautiful option for fall. Satin creates a sophisticated, romantic look. Crepe offers a clean and timeless silhouette and chiffon can still work beautifully when paired with the right accessories and layers. You can also play with sleeves, necklines, and silhouettes. Long sleeves are beautiful for a formal fall wedding, whereas midi-length dresses can feel chic and modern. And mismatched dresses can create a beautifully curated look when the colors and fabrics complement one another.
The key is cohesion, not identical clones.
Grooms: It's Your Season Too
Gentlemen, fall wedding fashion has entered the chat. While summer weddings tend to call for lightweight fabrics and lighter colors, fall opens the door to richer textures and more substantial suiting.
Think charcoal, navy, deep brown, forest green, warm gray, tweed, wool, and of course velvets. A beautifully tailored suit in a rich fall shade can look incredible against an outdoor autumn backdrop.
And don't forget the little details. Fall is the perfect time for a patterned tie, a textured pocket square or pop of warm color, leather shoes, a velvet bow tie, and a special watch.
Even the boutonnière can incorporate seasonal colors and textures. The goal isn't to look like you wandered into a costume shop labeled “Autumn Gentleman.” It's to add subtle details that make the season feel intentional.
Don't Forget the Groom's Accessories
Accessories are where the personality really comes through. Maybe it’s a vintage watch that used to be his grandfathers, a custom tie, a pair of fun socks, cufflinks with a meaningful detail, or a leather belt and shoes that will still be worn after the wedding.
These details may be small, but they can make the groom's look feel personal rather than simply formal.
And if you're getting married outdoors, don't forget the practical accessories, too. A stylish coat for portraits? Absolutely. What about a warm layer for the evening? Even better. Cold fingers during the ceremony? Let's avoid that by adding a fun, purposeful, fall accessory.
Fall Wedding Guest Fashion
Now for the guests. Fall wedding guest fashion is where things get really fun.
You can embrace richer colors, longer hemlines, elegant jackets, textured fabrics, and gorgeous accessories. A midi or maxi dress paired with heels or boots is a classic choice. A tailored jumpsuit can be equally chic.
For a more formal wedding, think about luxurious fabrics like velvet, satin, or crepe. For a casual celebration, a beautiful dress with boots or a polished separates look can work wonderfully.
And don't be afraid of color. Just because it's fall doesn't mean your wardrobe needs to be entirely brown. Jewel tones, muted florals, deep greens, burgundies, and warm neutrals can all feel beautifully seasonal.
What About the Weather?
Ah yes. Especially with a local wedding in the PNW, we all know fall weather can be up and down. The weather is the tiny detail that we can’t control, that can completely change your outfit.
Fall weather is unpredictable. You could have a gorgeous 70 degree afternoon followed by a very chilly evening. Or rain, or wind, or all three because apparently Mother Nature enjoys keeping wedding planners on their toes.
If the wedding is outdoors, layers are your best friend. A tailored coat, shawl, wrap, or elegant jacket can save the day.
And if you're attending a wedding where you'll be walking over grass, consider your shoes carefully. Those beautiful stilettos may have met their match. A block heel or elegant flat can be much more practical.
Fashion for Fall Wedding Photos
As a wedding planner, I always think about how fashion will look in photographs.
Fall gives you some incredible opportunities. Rich fabrics photograph beautifully. Textures add dimension. Deep colors pop against golden foliage. And a dramatic coat or cape can create an absolutely gorgeous portrait moment.
Brides, consider bringing your statement layer back out for portraits after the ceremony. Grooms, don't be afraid to wear that textured jacket. Bridesmaids, let those beautiful dresses move.
And don’t forget to take advantage of golden hour. Trust me on that one!
The Little Details Make the Look
Sometimes it's not the dress or suit that makes a fall wedding look feel special. It's the little things.
It’s a simple velvet ribbon on your bouquet, your gold jewelry sparkling during the golden hour sun, warm brown leather shoes, a beautiful clutch, a textured tie, a floral hairpiece with fall florals, a warm toned manicure, or a cozy shawl.
Even your bouquet can influence the overall look. These details are what turn an outfit into a complete wedding day look.
And Finally… Dress for the Love Story
At the end of the day, fall wedding fashion isn't about following every trend. It's about creating a look that feels right for the season and right for the celebration.
Choose pieces that make you feel comfortable. Choose colors that make you happy. Choose textures that make you want to reach out and touch them. And, most importantly, choose something that lets you enjoy the day.
Because your wedding day, or the wedding you're attending, is not a runway. It's a celebration. There will be happy tears. There will be champagne. There will probably be someone dancing who absolutely should not be dancing that way. There will be hugs, photographs, speeches, cake, and memories you'll talk about for years.
So wear something that makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Let the leaves change. Let the candles glow. Let the champagne flow. And let fall do what it does best - make everything feel just a little more romantic.
