Calming the Storm during the Planning Process

It holds true that sometimes, there can be too many cooks in the kitchen when trying to plan your big day. Yes, the love for your friends and family runs deep—but it can get really hard to make wedding decisions with so many opinions floating around. It’s even more difficult to keep the peace between parties when conflicting ideals arise. We have a few pointers for you and yours when you find yourself in this situation.

Set clear boundaries before any of the planning begins. Before you even jump into planning anything, make it clear that this is you and your partner’s day.  If a loved one brings up a venue you should absolutely, without a doubt, most definitely reserve, let them know you will take a look, but you will also be looking at other venues.  Let them know you are considering their recommendation, but are keeping your options open, sending the message that you appreciate their idea and will ultimately make the decision after all ideas are considered.

Travel in small groups. The more people you bring with you to make dress, flower, catering and décor decisions, the more opinions you are going to receive. Choose the least amount of absolutely essential people that you cannot make a decision without, and don’t add any extras. This will cut down on the amount of conflicting ideas that could arise.

Skip the consult. Sometimes you just have to listen to your gut when making certain decisions and asking your friends or loved ones what they think may just confuse you that much more. It’s almost impossible to make a decision with so many different views on one idea. This extends the amount of time it will take for you to make a decision, and you may just forget what it is that you and your partner actually want. Don’t ask what others think if you know what you want, just choose what you want and be confident in your choice! You are never going to choose something wrong if it’s something you like; this is your day!

Hand a little more control over to your planner. Sometimes introducing an objective third party into the planning process can be a great buffer between you and your family and friends. There are a lot of opinions floating around, but if you let your planner know what you want, he/she will certainly make it happen without feeling an emotional obligation to anyone else. Then, if someone is upset about it, the planner will be the middle person to back up you and your choices.

Of course you want all your loved ones to be there to help you map out your special day, but in reality it can be a bit tricky. You don’t have to cut them out of the planning process altogether, you just need to make sure you set clear boundaries and let everyone know that even though you may go a different direction, you still value their ideas. Elegant Affairs is of course here to help make this all easier!

Real Wedding: Kim + Anthony

What we loved most about Kim + Anthony's April wedding was just how much fun it was. Not just the fun had by their family and friends, but the fun our team had. We even got to let our hair down and bust some moves on the dance floor.

With a soft color palette of white, creams and pinks, we loved what Kim created for her day. From the bridesmaid dresses to the flowers, this color scheme worked perfectly for their spring wedding.

Our favorite idea that Kim came up was was how she wanted her cake displayed. With help from Love Blooms who provided the glass topper, that was placed o top of a linen covered crate, to give it that elevated "floating" look. By adding the votives under the glass, it helped to illuminate the cake.

One of our favorite moments were there wasn't a dry eye in the room was when Kim's father joined her on the the dance floor for their dance. It was truly a beautiful moment for everyone.

Find your Perfect Dress without finding yourself in Debt

Finding your perfect dress can be a struggle if you don’t have a cap set for how much money you are able to spend in that area. First, set the budget! From there, follow the guidelines we have listed below so you can find your ideal wedding dress without the risk of overspending.

Don’t try on the most expensive dresses first. Start with the cheaper of the selection when trying on dresses. This way, you won’t be discouraged and convincing yourself that the more expensive dress is better quality over the less expensive dress. You’d be shocked with how much of this is only in our minds! Granted, this is not true for all dresses, but working up is much better than working down.

After you find the one, don’t keep looking. After you find the dress that you know is the one, don’t continue to shop for another. If you find a beautiful dress that is within your price range and you absolutely love it, don’t try on a more expensive dress just for kicks. Commit to your decision! If you’re unsure about the dress you’re thinking of committing to, by all means keep looking.

Consignment boutiques. Wedding dresses are traditionally only worn once for a couple of hours, then completely discarded. There are a plethora of shops that take these dresses and repurpose them for other brides at a lower cost, making sure all gowns are in mint condition for resale. They also have dresses that have never been worn but are 1-2 years old that and also discounted. This is a wonderful option if you’re looking for Designer style at an affordable price. One of our favorite shops is Blue Sky Bridal in Greenwood, WA!

Avoid expectations. Do you have your eye on a specific dress you saw in a magazine? Don’t exhaust yourself trying to find the exact same dress. Instead, go into shopping for your dress with an open mind and heart. Dresses featured in magazines are usually Designer and extremely expensive, as they are featured straight off the runway. Keep the design and style in mind, but let yourself be free to the idea that you may end up falling for an even lovelier dress.

Dress shopping is often the most exciting part of prepping for your wedding. It also can be the most stressful when trying to stick to your budget, but with these guidelines, you may be able to find the gown that’s best for you without all the inner conflict! Good luck!
