How to prepare for any wedding weather situation!

Having your wedding ceremony and reception outside is a wonderful idea, but doing so in the Pacific Northwest requires a bit of extra preparation. Don’t ruminate about the possibility of disaster without taking action! Instead, take the time to consider reasonable precautions. Take a look at our preparation checklist and remedies to get you started.

Possible problem: Rain.
Remedy: Tent or umbrellas.

The first thing that comes to mind for any PNW couple hoping to celebrate their nuptials outside is the possibility of R-A-I-N. To avert this disaster, look into renting a large tent (they don’t have to be solid white; you can rent clear top tents also) just as a backup in case of a storm. We recommend always including a tent for the reception as an undercover option to help shield from the possibility of a very hot sun or torrential downpour—in case the weather goes either way. If you are willing to risk it without the tent for your ceremony but still want to take slight precaution, provide umbrellas for your guests to take with them to their seats. This makes for stunning and unique photos as well!

Possible problem: Wind.
Remedy: Tent curtains, outdoor heaters, afghans or shawls.

The wind can pick up unexpectedly at the most inconvenient times around the PNW. Instead of panicking the minute it does, be ready with curtains on your tent. Tent curtains are a game changer and can make your space more intimate and cozy. Add some outdoor heaters to warm the space up and keep the cold out if you foresee a storm in the forecast. Another great idea is providing lightweight afghans or shawls for your guests to throw over their shoulders when the sun goes down and it starts to get chilly. This can double as a wedding favor if you are able to find afghans in bulk, making it easier to afford.

Possible problem: Hot hot heat.
Remedy: Handheld fans, cold beverages.

The warmest months in our neck of the woods usually consist of July and August with temperatures that can reach up to 88 degrees. Rare but still plausible, make sure to be checking the weather forecast as frequently as possible in the days leading up to your wedding during these two months. Handheld fans may not resolve the issue completely, but they will help your guests fight the heatwave until they can indulge in a cool beverage after the ceremony. This leads me to my next remedy; provide plenty of cold water…emphasis on the “cold!” Guests will be craving a refreshing drink and cocktails alone will just make them thirstier while creating a perfect storm of dehydration. Make access to chilled water easy and plentiful.

You can definitely have a successful wedding outdoors; you just need to make sure you have a backup plan in case something goes awry. Being prepared is important, so take these ideas into consideration when you’re planning your outdoor festivities.

A Look Back | All White Winter Wonderland Wedding | The Kelly Farm

May 28, 2020 Lori Losee

Venue: The Kelley Farm | Wedding Planner: Elegant Affairs | Photographer: Corliss Photography | Videographer: Dark Ek Videography | Caterer: Mama Stortinis | DJ: Leujam | Hair: Nicole Huizenga | Lashes: Lash Out Loud! | Dessert Table: Better Than a Boyfriend Bakery | Florist: Orting Flowers |
Rentals: Cort Party Rental, and American Party Place

Today I wanted to look back at one of our favorite weddings from 2014 at The Kelley Farm. In truth it’s on my Top 10 all-time Elegant Affairs weddings.

I first met Angela + George a few weeks after the 2014 Seattle Wedding Show when the bride's ultimate goal was to meet me at the show, I knew from that moment I had a great couple who entrusted me with their Winter Wonderland themed wedding at The Kelley Farm.

And what a theme it was! From an all-white color palette with a hint of silver, this couple really thought of it all. From the hot chocolate bar to the Christmas tree guest book to the incredible dessert table to even an appearance from Santa. And we can't forget the snow machines. If we couldn't make actual snow happen, we had it made as guests walked in. It served as a perfect backdrop as the bride and her father emerged to the delight of their nearly 300 guests.

Speaking of decor, we loved everything. From the baby's breath floral balls that were attached the ceiling to the flowers and candles down the aisle, not to mention the handmade runner that was nearly 75ft. long. The bride and her bridesmaids hand-glued every single white rose petal. Due to the last shipment of petals being caught up in customs, there even might have been still some gluing the day of the wedding.

But this couple who had everything planned down to the fine details were taken for a surprise at the end of the night when the groom's mother had planned a fireworks spectacular across the valley from her house.

Who Gets a “Plus One?"

When creating your guest list, plus ones are always a challenge. Let’s be real, at the end of the day you don’t want to end up with a bunch of Tinder dates at your wedding! So here are my tips for trimming down your guest list without leaving all your guests at the singles’ table.

1.       If they’re under 21 they don’t get a plus one

This is a general rule of thumb, but of course there are exceptions! But you can pretty much guarantee that if they are too young to drink alcohol they are too young for a plus one!

2.       Make sure the entire bridal party gets a plus one

Your bridal party is doing a lot for you and for your wedding so make sure you thank them with a plus one. This will keep them all happy and keep any single people from feeling awkward while surrounded by all of your married friends.

3.       If they rely on Tinder, they don’t get a plus one

Anyone who isn’t in a committed, or at least somewhat committed relationship doesn’t get a plus one. You are paying for every guest so wouldn’t you like each guest to be important to you? Your wedding should not be the venue for a first date!

At the end of the day, weddings are expensive and personal events. You don’t want to spend that day with strangers nor do you want to pay for a stranger’s meal! So be sure to keep plus ones in mind and who you are giving them too when planning your guest list.
